It is home to one of the most important Buddhist monastery- the Alchi monastery there is in all of Ladakh. There are multiple ways in which you get to Alchi from Leh. Here are all the details you need to know on how to reach Alchi:

By Bus

The state-run JKSRTC buses service the route between Leh and Alchi. It is the best way of transport as it is economical and does not burn a hole in your pocket as taxis would do. Buses are available at frequent intervals from the Leh bus stand. A mini bus plies once daily which departs from the new bus stand in Leh near Handicraft Training Center at 8 a.m. and reaches Alchi at 3 p.m. You can also take a bus that goes to Kargil from Leh. It will take the same route, however, the bus turns off from a bridge and you will have to walk for 4 km on a dusty road to get to Alchi from the turning point. You can try and hitch a ride with locals too from there.

By Private Vehicle

Alchi is well-connected with Leh through a strong road network. It has great accessibility as it is only 70 km away from Leh city. Driving down from Srinagar is also a good option and the distance is 400 km which can be covered in about 10 hours. Only high ground clearance vehicles like a MUV or an SUV are preferred. Leave very early from Leh so that you can avoid the traffic of heavy trucks and army vans entering the city. Hit the Srinagar – Leh Highway and take a slight diversion from Srinagar Leh Highway at Saspol. Drive for around 60 km to get to the Sasapol bridge. Upon crossing the bridge, turn left from there to reach Alchi.

By Bike

Travelling on a motorcycle is the best way to reach Alchi. It is fast and the roads are also good. The route to Alchi is extremely scenic and provides a very thrilling ride over the gorges and dangerous roads. Being on a bike gives you the opportunity to halt and bask in the natural landscapes. It is advisable to get your vehicle properly serviced before you embark on your road trip. You can even rent two-wheelers from Leh city by proving them with a copy of a valid driving liscense. Carry spare tyres as you will be on the move through a rugged terrain and get you tank fueled up as well because once you leave Leh city, you will not find fuel stations and essential help on the way.

Kargil is spanned across 15000 kilometres and is situated on the banks of the Indus river. It is set 8,780 feet above the sea level and after Leh, it is the largest town of Ladakh. It holds great significance in the history of the country as the land has been a battlefield of the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971.

The only way to reach Kargil is by road as it is completely landlocked. You can choose to travel via bus, private taxi or hired vehicle or by a road trip on a motorcycle.

Here are all the details you need to know on how to reach Kargil:

Touring Ladakh on a bus is every backpacker’s dream. Buses are a convenient mode of transport and do not burn a hole in your pocket. However, the service is not very extensive and you will have limited options to choose from. You can take a bus from Leh bus stand or another option is to hop on a bus from Srinagar, depending upon your travel itinerary.

Buses from Srinagar: Buses service the route on a day to day basis between Srinagar and Kargil. These are operated by J&K SRTC. Ladakh Corporation LBOC also runs buses to multiple locations in Ladakh. The bus departs from Srinagar at 7 a.m., reaches Sonmarg at 11 a.m., then Drass at 2 p.m. and then Kargil at 5 p.m. Deluxe coaches are also available on this route.

There are two best routes to reach Kargil. You can either choose to fly to Srinagar and drive to Kargil or if you are in Leh, then take the route that comprises of a lot of sightseeing as well via Lamayuru and Mulbekh.

Route 1: From Srinagar (Srinagar – Sonamarg – Zoji La – Drass – Kargil)

Starting from Srinagar early in the morning and head towards the small town of Ganderbal. The traffic on this path is a bit rash and the roads are narrow so take caution while crossing this area. The landscape turns extremely scenic after that as you drive towards the small town of Kangan. Continue your drive through the mesmerizing valleys of Kashmir until you reach Sonamarg. Drive to the popular camping point of Baltal from there and then climb up the mighty Zoji La Pass. Once you are done basking in the snowy views from an altitude of 11,575 ft, then reach the town of Drass. Pay a quick visit to the famous Kargil War Memorial which is located here and then run about 65 kilometres straight to Kargil.

Route 2: From Leh (Leh – Nimmu – Lamayuru – Fotu La – Namik La – Mulbekh – Kargil)

The location of Kargil town from Leh is approximately 220 km. It should roughly take you 5 hours of road journey, depending upon your speed and road conditions. Fuel up your tank to the full as you will not find petrol stations once you leave Leh. Head to the scenic town of Nimmu first. Once you get to Nimmu, look for the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. The road ahead that takes you straight to the moonscape town of Lamayuru. Once you are done ogling at its monasteries, cross over the two high passes of Fotu-la and Namik La which are set at an altitude of 4120 meters and 3400 meters, respectively. Upon crossing these, you will get to Mulbekh and at a short distance from there, you will get to the historic town of Kargil.

There are ample bikes available on rent in Leh if you wish to opt for a thrilling road journey. The road between Leh and Kargil are open almost throughout the year. The main pass between Srinagar and Kargil, however, is only open from May to October due to heavy snowfall. The road on both routes is a mix of good and bad and it is advisable to check the weather conditions before commencing the journey on your bike. Since you will be travelling via the toughest of roads, choose your ride wisely. We recommend you to choose the Royal Enfield 350 C or an Enfield Bullet. If that is not available, you can also ride the Pulsar bikes. Make sure you have got your tank fueled up as the gas stations are not available after Leh and Srinagar. The next fuel pump you will find is directly in Kargil.

Here are all the ways in how you can reach the Nubra Valley:

By Bus

Opt for a bus from Leh and experience travelling in Ladakh in a local way. They are the cheapest mode of transport. Although, these buses do not stop for any sightseeing on the way. Regular bus services operate to and from the Nubra Valley by both, private and government owners. About 8-9 buses run by the state JKSRTC department are available whose routes connects various villages like Diskit, Hunder, Panamik, Turtuk and Sumur. Three buses travel from Leh to Diskit on every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday of the week. It departs at 6 a.m. from the Leh bus stand. Another bus starts from Leh to Skuroo in Nubra Valley every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 a.m. There is also another bus to Turtuk that departs on every Saturday, again at 6 a.m. from the Leh bus stand. It is the last village in Nubra Valley right before the L.O.C. The tickets for all these can be bought directly at the Leh bus stand. By Private Vehicle

There are 3 routes available to go from Leh to Nubra Valley. These are via Khardung La Pass, Wari La and Agham Shyok road.

Route 1: via Khardung La (Leh – Khardung La – Khalsar – Warshi – Diskit- Hunder- Turtuk)

Travelling through Khardung La road is the most convenient route for travellers. It is claimed to be the highest motorable road and the views from up above here are insane. That is the best advantage you have of travelling in a private vehicle that you can take a halt here and enjoy the scenic views. More than 90% of the tourists take this way to reach Nubra Valley.

Take the road from Leh towards Khardung La, cross the Khardungla village after and head to reach Khalsar. The road till Khalsar is smooth and hence, it will not take you longer to cover the distance. Slightly before Khalsar, the road will divide in two and both leads to Nubra Valley. The road on your right goes to Sumur, Panamik and Warshi and the left one goes to Diskit and Turtuk.

Route 2: via Wari La (Leh – Kari – Sakti – Wari La – Agham – Khalsar – Warshi – Diskit- Hunder- Turtuk)

Those travellers who are either returning from Nubra valley to Leh or heading towards Pangong Tso usually take this route. This road is not a walk in the park as it is challenging to cross Wari La in your vehicle in terms of distance, difficulty and the time taken. It is advisable to start early from Leh as this route is time consuming.

Route 3: via Agham Shyok Road (Leh – Pangong Tso – Shyok Village – Agham – Khalsar – Warshi – Diskit- Hunder- Turtuk)

This is not really a route that you must opt for to reach Nubra Valley from Leh. That is because there are no roads at all on this path. It is broken and filled with dirty rocks and loose gravel all around. It is not wrong to say that driving on this road is also dangerous. The only advantage is that the travel time via this road to get to Pangong Tso directly from Nubra valley is merely 6 hours. From Leh, you must take the road towards Pangong Tso and get to Durbuk. From there, take the turn towards Shyok Village and continue towards Nubra Valley.

By Bike

The main road access to the Nubra Valley on a bike is over the Khardung La pass. It is open throughout the year. Roads conditions will be a mix of good and bad. If you opt for travelling via Wari La, check the season as it opens a bit late after winters as compared to other roads. BRO clears this road for bikes by late June or early July only. If you opt for the route via Agham Shyok Road, please note that it can be very dangerous to travel on bike. Take that route only if there are more than 2-3 motorcycles travelling together. Also fuel the tank to the fullest and carry extra petrol as there are no petrol pumps available once you leave Leh city.

How to get to Turtuk Village is a question that needs a detailed answer owing to its remote location and challenging terrain. It is India’s last rural idyll and is among the newest areas in Ladakh that are opened for tourism. Since it is set barely a kilometer away from the L.O.C., an Indian citizen will need an Inner Line Permit to visit this place. It is one of the most sensitive zones and is heavily guarded by the army. Foreigners will need to provide a Protected Area Permit.

It is set at a distance of approximately 205 kilometres from the Leh city. An 8-hour drive should get you here from Leh, but it all depends on your vehicle, its speed and the conditions of the weather and roads.

Here are all the details you need to know on how to reach Turtuk Village:

By Bus

Even with a commendable rise in the tourism of Ladakh, the availability of public transport is below average. Travelling by bus can save you a great deal of money and can reduce your overall trip cost. However, if you wish to travel by bus, you will have to match the bus timings with your itinerary or work around another way if you fail to do so.

Suggested Read: Best Time to Visit Turtuk Village

Very few buses service this sector. There is one weekly bus only that starts from the Leh bus stand on every Saturday at 6 a.m. Approximate fare per person is INR 350. You can buy the ticket from the Leh bus stand and it is recommended that you do so a day prior to your journey day as the seats are very limited on this bus.

If you happen to miss out on this bus option, do not worry. Another route is to catch two buses, one that takes you from Leh to Diskit and then another from Diskit bus stand to Turtuk Village. There are three buses on every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday starting at 6 a.m. from Leh bus stand to go to Diskit. From there, a daily bus leaves at 2.30 p.m. and arrives in Turtuk at 6.30 p.m. The fare per person is approximately INR 100.

By Private Vehicle

Travelling by private vehicle to Turtuk village is a great option. It will let you take halts and enjoy the journey as per your own wish. Below is the route and explanation of how to get to Turtuk Village from Leh.

Route: Leh– Khardung La – Khalsar – Diskit – Hunder – Thoise – Skuru – Bogdang – Turtuk

Take an early start from Leh. This will help you avoid major traffic hours on your journey. Drive to what is acclaimed to be the highest motorable pass- the Khardung La Pass. It is about 35 kilometres from Leh city centre and you should reach the top in approximately 90 minutes at the most. The route is entirely scenic and you can take a short break to enjoy the views from atop. Once you cross the pass, you will descend in the valley of Nubra. Continue the drive for another 22 kilometers to reach Khalsar. The road will bifurcate from there and the one running left will take you to the picturesque towns of Sumur, Panamik, and Warshi. You need to take the right turn that will go towards Diskit and Hunder villages and finally end at Turtuk. All this time, the beautiful Shyok River will be running on your right. Once you drive ahead from Diskit and Hunder towards Turtuk, many areas prohibit photography so be careful with your cameras.

By Bike

Travelling to Turtuk Village on a motorbike will give you an unbeatable experience of exploring Ladakh. It is a long and bumpy ride, but not so much as the road is well paved almost all the way. It can be extremely pleasurable to motor-cycle or bicycle in here. Cross the high altitude mountain pass of Khardung La with care. The roads are steep and a heavy bike with higher power is recommended. However, remember to fill fuel and tank up in Leh itself as there are very few places to buy provisions on the way. Bikes can get you to the village with ease since there is very little traffic. Prepare at least 3 photocopies of the permit as the checkpoints usually ask you to deposit a copy with them.

It is advisable to break the journey in two halves. The journey from Leh to Padum will take you two days to complete, depending upon your speed, and you will have to opt for a night halt at Kargil. To get to Kargil, you can choose to go via Mulbekh and Lamayuru, which is the ideal route or the second route is via Batalik sector. Cross the Fotu la and Namik La passes and continue all the way till you reach Drass. When you leave from Kargil the next day, head to the beautiful Suru Valley. Continue travelling right next to the Suru river and reach Sankoo. A few kilometres after Sankoo, cross the Suru River over to its right and head to Panikhar. Roads are mostly good until Panikhar after which they turn bad and then worse until Padum. It is an unmetalled dirt road all the way long. Continue travelling right next to Suru river until you get to Rangdum. You can spend some time here and visit the famous Rangdum monastery. Then move south towards Pensi La which is a very easy pass to cross and enter the final stretch of the journey to Padum. Then descend into Zanskar valley.

An SUV with good ground clearance is your best choice of vehicle. That is because the availability of mechanics on the route is limited to Leh and Kargil. Even the smallest breakdown can be catastrophic as you will be driving through highly remote areas. Get your tank fueled in Kargil and it should be sufficient to get to you to Padum. You will easily be able to buy both diesel and petrol in Padum if need be.

By Bike

Bringing your own motorcycle will definitely be the fastest and the most convenient way to commute to Zanskar Valley. It will give you the flexibility of planning your itinerary. However, since the journey is a long one and you will be carrying some amount of luggage with you, make sure that you are doing so on a motorcycle with a larger engine. Royal Enfield 350 CC or 500 CC ones are the best choices. The additional power will come in handy. There is no need of carrying extra fuel if your tank is filled to the brim in Kargil.

Srinagar is fondly known as heaven on earth. It is located in the union territory of the state, on the banks of the very famous river, Jhelum. The summer capital of the state is known for its houseboats and gondola-type rowboats- Shikaras on Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake.

Srinagar is considered to be the dream destination for honeymooners and family vacations. The Shikaras help tourists to visit the Floating Vegetable Market and the Mir Bahris – a community of locals who live on the lake itself. In addition, the houseboats provide a beautiful and unique stay experience at the lake. Something that a hotel room or campsite will definitely not. Srinagar also houses exquisite Mughal-age gardens- Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashm-E-Shahi Garden. The city also has a Tulip Garden that will catch your attention.

Even Kashmiri cuisine is famous throughout the world. So, when in Srinagar, you must let your tastebuds experience some unique fragrant spices. Srinagar is also famous for its Kashmiri shawls, Kashmiri apples, and dried fruits. You can get these at the Lal Chowk Market.

The best time to visit the city is usually during the summer. During winter, heavy snowfall affects the connectivity of Srinagar. Sometimes communal tensions also lead to frequent curfews in some parts of the city. But now it is all under control.

A pristine hill station in the state of Jammu and Kashmir is Sonamarg. It is located around 80 km from Srinagar towards the northeast. The hill station sits at an elevation of around 2800 km from sea level. The place is known for its snow-laden fields, enclosed by majestic glaciers and serene lakes. These will definitely leave you mesmerized. Sonamarg literally means ‘the meadow of gold’ and with snow-covered mountains, it is as close to heaven as it can get. Also, the Sindh River flows through the valley.

The great Himalayan glaciers like Kolhoi and Machoi envelope the hill station. This gave rise to the famous Three Sisters of Kashmir Valley. Also, one can’t miss out on the towering peaks like Kolhoi, Amarnath, Machoi and Sirbal which makes Sonamarg a popular place for adventure sports tourism.

The hill station is also a base camp for many trekking routes. These treks will lead you to the mountain lakes such as Gangabal, Vishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Kishansar. The valley of Sonamarg is divided into two sections by the Thajiwas range. One section is the Thajiwas spur popular for its camping site. The other side houses some stunning waterfalls and the Thajiwas glacier, which is the most breathtaking attraction of the place. Horses and ponies can be hired to reach the Thajiwas glacier.

However, Sonamarg remains inaccessible during winters. The NH1D connecting it to the nearby places is shut down due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.

Sonamarg is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit the hill station is from April to June. During this time, you are likely to find wildflowers carpeting the valley. Also, during this time there is heavy pilgrim traffic for the Amarnath Yatra.

Pahalgam is famous for its scenic beauty and is considered a jewel of the breathtaking Liddar valley. It is located in the western part of Kashmir, in the northern region of India. The valley sits at an altitude of 2130 m above sea level surrounded by the great mountains of the Himalaya.

The place is ideal for hiking, trekking and fishing. In fact, it is also the starting point of the Amarnath yatra which is an annual pilgrimage.

One of the most beautiful and popular treks in the region is the Kolhoi Glaciers trek via a beautiful village named Aru. The locals also offer sledging on frozen glaciers. In addition, the long stretches of rivers in Pahalgam are the perfect site for people who enjoy trout fishing.

Suggested Read: Things to do in Pahalgam

Pahalgam is also the place where Sunny Deol’s and Amrita Singh’s famous Bollywood movie Betaab, was shot. The valley was then named Betaab Valley. Sheshnaag Lake, in the valley, is another beautiful place to visit. Also, when in Pahalgam, don’t forget to go shopping and buy authentic Kashmiri saffron from Pampore.

The origin of Pahalgam, however, is obscure. In the medieval period, it was ruled by the Mughals and later it become a part of the Kingdom of Kashmir, which local Hindu rulers ruled. In fact, even during the British Raj, this princely state remained independent and then was merged into independent India, later on.

The weather in Pahalgam is alpine. Summers are not very hot but the winters are chilly. It does experience a little rain but not much. The snowfall is heavy though that happens from December to February. An ideal season to visit the valley of the shepherds is during the summer. Somewhere between mid-April and mid-November. It is also visited from July-August when the Amarnath yatra begins.
